The Moderate Proposition

We constantly hear about the partisan politics in Washington, D.C., and the inability of our elected officials to compromise on necessary legislation. And why not? Our process results in the election of senators and congressmen with extreme views.

Ironically, most pertinent topics have a solid majority of Americans who could support a more moderate, centrist position. Because while Congress can’t compromise, the American people can.

And if enough of us accept common sense positions, even if we recognize they are not the perfect solution, then we can make significant progress in solving the problems we face. Combining progress on these types of challenges with the indomitable spirit of the citizens of the U.S. will allow us to maintain our status as the unique citadel of freedom and democracy.

Please carefully consider whether you could support a moderate proposition: fiscally smart, and socially realistic. In support of such an idea, I humbly submit one below. If so, like it on Facebook, forward it to your friends, do what you can to help move the U.S. back towards a positive path. A groundswell of activism is critical if we are to force our representatives to act.

The following proposition, if passed, will include an agreement to rejoin from reconsideration of any article for a minimum period of ten years, unless a supermajority of two-thirds of both the house and the senate agree to overrule any individual item.

Extreme
Liberal

N/A

No restrictions,
including partial birth abortion.

No guns. Squirt guns, bb guns, and sling shots questionable.

Tax corporations and the wealthy. Enhance the Earned Income

Tax Credit for the working poor.

No cuts, and in fact we need to recognize the minimum payouts are insufficient for elderly in need.

Defense of country is the only justification for intervention, which allows for significant and dramatic cuts.

A ridiculously complex Dodd Frank Banking Reform.

Pander to the Hispanic vote.

Why not?

Open-minded.

A belief that government can regulate behavior. A bias in favor of the consumer and against business.

The Moderate Proposition

Organ Donation

Make it an opt-out situation, so families are not faced with the decision at time of death.

Abortion

Limit abortions by disallowing them after the first trimester unless the woman’s health is at risk. Enhance education to reduce the incidences of unplanned pregnancies in general.

Gun Control

Implement limits on assault rifles, magazines and clips, and tighten screening for gun applications. Expansion of laws to cover all channels of gun sales.

Taxation

Recognize everyone has an obligation to support the Federal government, including the military and the safety net. Therefore, all income should be recognized, including benefits. Then eliminate deductions and lower the rates to eliminate distortions. Evaluate the historical average of government as a % of GDP (say 18%). Simplify
the tax code for businesses and individuals with two tiers, no deductions. Rates will go down and deductions will be eliminated on an offsetting basis over a phase in period.

Social Security & Medicare

Higher age limits indexed to longevity. Tighter restrictions on disability. Use the chain COLA. Raised income threshold maximum necessary to ensure program longevity, as a stand-alone entity.

Military Spending & Mandate

Maintain budget as a fixed percent of GDP, set at historical levels. Funds to be set aside as part of this budget for future military engagements. Mandate to support the expansion of freedom around the globe.

Financial System Stability

Given the inability of legislation to keep up with the Invisible Hand of free enterprise, let’s accept you can never create a comprehensive list of things banks and business CAN’T do. Therefore, identify a dollar value of assets as too-big-to-fail. Banks over that size pay a tax penalty to compensate for the inherent interest rate subsidy from the presumed taxpayer backstop.

Immigration

Recognize that America was built
on Immigration, and leverage immigration to help fund future entitlements. Prioritize educated and wealthy immigrants with key skills. Allow a path to citizenship, while enforcing border security.

Gay Marriage

Change regulations to recognize Civil Unions as the norm of the land. Marriage becomes a religious designation, and each couple can choose their own religion.

Euthanasia

Recognize the dignity of the human experience, and allow individuals of sound mind to receive professional health for end of life decisions.

Regulatory

Recognize you can’t be opposed to regulations AND legal recourse. But you can support and be in favor of clear, limited and effective governmental guidelines and regulations.

Extreme Conservative

N/A

No abortions, including some restrictions on Pill varieties that can abort fertilized eggs.

No restrictions.
Probably even support a nice chemical weapon for law-abiding citizens.

Shrink government significantly, cut taxes as a means to “starve the beast”.

Privatize, or at least recognize the system cost and trends are unsustainable. Fix via raising the age and lowering the COLA.

Global leadership and Superpower status dictate mandate to intervene around the globe.

A naïve belief in self-regulation and market dynamics.

A myopic view of closing the borders.

Why?

Typically against.

Pollyannaish belief in capitalism. Skepticism towards government and a bias against regulations.
