Preface to The DAD Protocol
Our daily news is replete with stories on new DNA advancements and the strides being made by scientists around the world. Many comment on the fact our scientific and innovative capabilities are moving more quickly than our societal norms, ethics and morals. For example, as the costs go down to sequence a human genome, we aren’t far away from being able to assess the physical and mental capabilities of a fetus. And then, eventually, we’ll have the capability to choose what some call a designer baby, blueprinting the very personality, intellect and aesthetic of a future child. It’s even conceivable women’s stem cells could be transformed into sperm, obviating the need for a man. Then, beyond that, we could nurture a fetus in an artificial womb, removing the last vestige of humanity in the actual creation of a baby.
The implications for the future are exciting, but also disquieting. Hospitals and clinics in emerging countries already abort female babies to avoid their only child being a girl. Fetal testing can determine physical and genetic abnormalities, also resulting in abortion. While this book doesn’t even begin to address some of the more complicated potentialities, it does start a dialog on some of the decisions we might face. It also expands that conversation to include the role of government in our everyday lives, touching on religion as well.
We have much to discuss in regards to politics, religion and science; and throughout history, authors have long used the fiction novel to explore concepts and ideas in controversial topics. I hope you enjoy my newest entrant into the theo-political fiction genre.
